"My Beautiful Mess" of a friend makes mornings special...

My Beautiful Mess of a friend Vikki got me the cup & saucer on an exploratory trip we took to Old Time Pottery last month.  She also gave me the silver knife (along with some silver forks), which was passed to her from her aunt.  It made me feel a little guilty to take it, but I have to say it makes me feel special when I use it...which would be almost daily!  It is the best spreader!!!  And a cup...with a saucer...just adds something to the morning.  It's a little more formal & will make you feel just that much more important!

If you have silver that you're just storing...get it out and use it & find the saucers that came with your cups & use them!

Have a great Sunday!

We ate snails for dessert!

little momma & co. had the best recipe featured on SITS.  snails...the best snails we've ever had!!!  some of our snails made trails over to our neighbor...mrs. murphy (hey!!! mrs. murphy...good morning).  check out little momma & co. (they are just the cutest family) and then head on over to SITS for some more recipes!

my grandmother...

my first day off in 12 days and I can't sleep!  i have dreamt of my grandmother from the moment my eyes closed this evening.  i think of her often, but this summer when I put in my normal philosophy order I decided to add something new...pure grace!  the smell brought back powerful memories from my childhood of summers on the jersey shore.  my mother loved the beach and we took many trips each year to jersey where we stayed at a place called "the garfield."  it was built in the 1800's...i'm not even sure of it's condition or if it even stands today.  we always stayed in the same room.  the windows would always be open and the breeze blowing the curtains.  the smell of perfectly clean sheets & hotel soap.
on this particular trip my mother would tell my grandmother that she (my grandmother) had cancer and that it was terminal.  i love that, even though she knew this, in that moment she was just there with me & my mom.  that she just smiled as i covered her in sand.
that she spent the days with me getting water for sand castle moats & sifting through sand.
that she just walked with me.

two years after this trip my grandmother would come to live with us...my mother & i.  as she was bedridden i came down with scarlet fever.  i was very sick and was paralyzed from the waist down for over a month from the illness.  my mother had to work so we had a full time nurse.  when i woke my grandmother would have our nurse bring me to her room where i would spend the day.  her resistance was nonexistent and I was contagious.  i love that, even though she knew this, in that moment she was just there with me!

philosophy from philosophy

pure grace is the clean smell of soap and water, the memory of fresh air woven into a set of crisp, white cotton sheets, a cold deep breath on a snowy winter night, the best summer morning you have ever known, the one white t-shirt that feels better that all the rest.

one of the best tools for longevity and good health is not just taking a walk outdoors but taking your walk while holding the hand of God.  when we walk in gratitude for each and every moment, we empower ourselves by empowering our spirits.  when we breathe in nature through our eyes, ears and lips, we become certain that not only are our souls eternal, but that God knows how to manage our lives, our troubles, our worries and our days better than we do.  so today and everyday "let go and let God."

Have I ever told you I have the best husband, best kids, best job???

Friday we went to Daytona Beach for the Southeastern University Student Life Leadership Team Building Retreat.  The retreat is actually three days, but we only go for one day since it is so close to the start of school for our kids.  Curtis drove me, the kids & Mrs. Rutland (my amazing director), to Daytona for the day.  Now the retreat is a lot of fun, but we do have some training.  So while I was at one of the team building sessions Curtis took the kids down to the beach.  They weren't paying attention to the waves coming in and their shoes started to float away.  The kids thought that was hysterical :0)

Logan & Courtney
Courtney & Logan with the Daytona Hilton in the background where the retreat was held this year.  This section of the beach was very nice & clean.  Not all of Daytona is this way!
After lunch Courtney stayed with me and Curtis took Logan to the Daytona for the Nascar experience.  They had so much fun...Just the guys!!!  Logan loved every bit of it...especially the hour long 3-D movie they show about Nascar history!
After a meeting about an upcoming project and some brainstorming...Courtney and I headed down to the beach.  She was so good through the whole meeting!

Courtney & Me
I work in FIRST Teams at SEU, which is a mentoring program for incoming freshman students to provide an immediate care network and help with assimilation into college life.  We have about 100 volunteer leaders...16 of them are mentors to the leaders who lead the freshman teams.

Kim, Krista & Kelly...three of the mentors for the program on retreat.
Courtney...

Me...
An unexpected wave :0)  The water was somewhat cool for this time of year...probably because of all the rain we have had.
Renee & Kate both work in Student Life.
This is all of the FIRST Teams mentors.  We took this photo at the end of last semester.  Some of them were able to return to school early to attend the retreat and the others will be back this Wednesday...I can't wait!!!  Each one of them will put in 200+ volunteer hours for FIRST Teams this year...not including all the hours of volunteer work they put in throughout the community & their churches.  Each one of these faces represents a blessing in my life.  I enjoy working with them!!!

A few great finds...

Curtis and I spent Monday antiquing & driving around.  We found this beautiful home in Wauchula, FL.  It is being used as office space for an attorney.  Lucky for the people who work there...what a beautiful place to be all day!  The back is absolutely beautiful also.  I had visions of myself living there...sitting out back...watching the kids play!  Then I snapped out of it...this house is miles from much of anything other than the antique shops in Arcadia.  Boredom & antique shops are never a good mix.
$$$$$$$$$
I love the iron detail set into the house &
the arch of the doorway!
On our trip Curtis & I found a few treasures.  Most of the shops were closed, but we still had a fabulous time.  We found a little mason jar, flag pole holder (stamped PAT. APP'D FOR), and beautiful antique bowl.  We also found the chair of my dreams dating back to the 1800's for just a few thousand dollars.  Notice it is not  in the photo?
No, I'm not awaiting delivery :0(

I said "the chair of my dreams."

At least I got to see it & touch it...the detailing...uh...amazing.  I really wanted to sit in it, but I could tell by the look on the shop owner's face that would be out of the question.  He did give us a lot of good history & information.  We had to crack up though... as if we couldn't tell...he made sure we knew this was a "fine" antique store!!!  Well now...

Wednesday was a whole nother experience that is going to require a followup trip.  My first time shopping at Old Time Pottery.  Score..a large white platter, a large white bowl, a very cute bird, & two tin pots with unique handles that will be nestled into my Christmas tree & filled with candy canes.  A gift, you see to the right, from my friend Vikki who was shopping with me.  A too cute cup & saucer that I will be taking to work with me.  Oh...I forgot my little witch's hat for Halloween...so cute.  Next we were off to TJ Max where I found a reproduced blue transfer plate & a sweet little set of birds on their nest.
